Why did you participate to a challenge like the B.I.G. ?

For me it's just for fun, Etienne. I like cycling (also MTB!) and specially the climbing. It's also very nice that the BIG challenge brings you to verry special, interesting and surprising places.

Well, the first aim is to reach 164 BIGs of course. And at the current rate this will cost me 6 years at least. That I think is planning far enough in the future for the time being. Of course my aim is also to have fun and enjoy the cyclo climbing and beautiful scenery that I encounter when I cycle BIGs.
Rgs, Helmuth

Why join B.I.G.?
Ever since being a child I have loved the Tour de France, and especially the etappes with mountains. Although I had never seen a mountain and I could hardly imagine what a road in the mountains looked like.
Cycling in the mountains is enjoying beautiful scenery. It is adventure. Sometimes you will become very tired or even exhausted when you are putting as much strain as possible on body and mind. That challenge is inherent to this kind of cycling sport.
But why join the B.I.G.? Is it possible to define that?
Since the first time I read about it I was caught by the idea.
It is a list limited to 950 climbs, every time you climb a B.I.G. acknowledged peak you score. I would not have this same feeling of achievement if I were cycling for the U.I.C. or the Club du Cent Cols. Their lists of peaks are endless. The B.I.G. list is a complete reproduction of all climbs in Europe. Almost all the important climbs are on the list. Cycling for the B.I.G. leads to unknown but interesting areas. It is a way to see a great part of the world. Moreover, joining B.I.G. means searching several maps, it means comparing altitudes and gradients.
Of course I expect to go on with the B.I.G. challenge as long as I’m having fun and while I’m still healthy. So I might say my final aim is 1.000 B.I.G. acknowledged peaks, although I know that will be impossible for me because of the relentless process of ageing.
