Miért van Magyarország egy olyan " B.I.G " ország?
Why is Hungary such a "BIG" country ?

With only 1 wellknown professional racer, with a very new cycletouring hobby, why is there in this hungarian topic in the forum an incredible amount of more than 1.000 posts (half the total amount of posts for the whole forum) in this topic for hungarian, why will there be soon 100 hungarian members ? Why so many cyclists in the last cycletouring event in Budapest ? Why so many cycloclimbers in the hungarian place of the big-day ?

One of the reason is for me the 2 locomotives, the 2 leaders, the 2 managers, the 2 Gabór. Thousand thanks to them !
You can debate in hungarian language of this topic here, and just please, at the end, give us a summary in english.

Don't stop in such a good way. All our congratulations and friendship. Come on, hungary, let's climb again cheers

Hi Daniel!

I'm a new hungarian member of the B.I.G. I joined here after the B.I.G day 2010.
You're absuletely right. Hungarian B.I.G was very successful thanks to 2 Gábor. They know many people and they can speak with everybody in a good way. Anything you ask from them, they help you.
I'm looking forward to take part a new B.I.G event.

Sonny

Daniel,
1, :
Gábor Kreicsi is also a well known cyclotourist (he also write articles in cycling magazine) and organises very well events, brevets, etc, and is also motivated in informing people about it, ....
2: as I I am said to be between the serious cyclotourers of HUngary (with 15-18 years of cyclotouring mainly on ascents) and have huge (more then 400 pages of travelogues in hungarian and min. 40-50 pages of travelogues in english) information on my website (which is an occassion for cyclists to find my site, find the ascents) and know a lot of serious cyclotourers through my homepage (guestbook) , so a lof of cyclist who like ascending foudn my website and sometimes I informed them......

and I LOVE cyclotouring and CLIMBS SO MUCH that I wanted to inform people about this very good community of the BIG...the helpful people, etc

and after a while when we found most of the serious cyclotourers who like ascending, few of them are also well known in their community, touring group and they inform their partners.....
the more such member we have who are serious enough and have a touring community, the easier the growth of the members can be... (I have it can be understood).

The number of posts:
in HUngary I think there are 2 main forum where a lot of (?) cyclist write posts, but there are a mix of them: city bikers, flat terrain bikers, etc, but here - in the BIG forum - if there are only 10-15 forumwriters cyclists who like mainly / only ascents or are very well motivated on ascents, then this is the place where we can feel: ALL OF THE HUNGARIAN - active forumwriters MEMBERS FEEL THE SAME as ourselves.
Here, inn the BIG forums there are no city bikers, or flat terrain bikers, because this is the BIG: or there can be, but they must like ascents too, that's why they are here !
the other : the active forum-writers like cyclotouring and sometimes we inform the others (HERE) about our tours.
We like reading the travelogues of the others also.

When I write about my biketour in an other hungarian topic, the half of the readers are not so interested in ascents, but not here.
Here there are more "possessed" /"fool" cyclists there elsewhere.

we can add that there are a few cyclists who cycled BIGs but are not motivated joining the BIG: not so many, but there are.

The so many members of the BIG day gave us the information (as part of them told us) that such an event (no hurry, but cycling together and bike lifting on a climb) is good and enjoyable for them, so WE DECIDED TO GO ON WITH THIS TRADITION.
We write and talked about it how to go on with it....
also Dobogókpő is the best, as is not far from Budapest, but it would be good to organise such "BIG days" onto every hungarian BIG. But we have to speak about it more.....

And the last: I wrote somewhere that now Budapest has the most participants (30000-50000 or 80000 is written somewhere) on a Critical Mass event (because of the tragical direction/management of the capital for 20 years), the not too many kilometers of bicyclepaths.
It's true that most of them are flat terrain bikers but more bikers the Critical Mass have the more it proves that there are bikers who like ascents too. And they like such events and bikelifting....:-)))

I hope other hungarian member(s) will write thoughts yet ......

Regards,
Gabor Györgyi

PS: Just in the cycling magazine that was published today there is an article about the popular Ronde van Vlanderen :-)

Dear Daniel,
Why is Hungary such a big BIG-country? It has many reasons! The main thing is without any doubt the community forming personality of the two Gábors and the general popularity of the sport in Hungary. But there is also another factor which is perhaps to be explained to you.
As a member of the older generation I will never forget that for a long time we was excluded from the travelling to Europe or even to the neighboring so called “socialistic” countries. Later it has changed step by step, but even in the seventies we could get a passport to the West once in every three years only. We needed a visa to every visited country and for that visas we had to wait many hours on the streets at the embassies. A little, but characteristic detail, that at that times France had only five border crossing points dedicated to us, and the Col de Petit St Bernard was not among those – so on my first biking tour in the Alps, in 1988, I was must to entry the country in a risky illegal way. You can imagine that to organize a biking trip to the Alps was for us similar difficult, as for you to make a trip to Borneo!
This is why biking in the mountains means for me so much. It is not only a challenging sport, not only a lot of beautiful scenery and living nature: it is also a symbol of freedom, it is a sign, that finally also we became members of your community. This is why BIG is so important for me, this is one of the reasons I joined with full hearth and enthusiasm as I heard about it from Györgyi Gábor. Here I can play on an international level, I can compare myself to Spanish or Belgian bikers, and the only limitation is not the politics but my own weakness. And, of course, we wish to proudly show to the bikers of more lucky nations that also we are here!
So I’m very obliged to the Gábors for the proper organizing the Hungarian group and for you, Daniel, and your colleagues, for the fantastic playing ground which is the BIG. Think BIG!

Yes, it's good that you wrote this reason. This is very true !

It was funny that I knew a lot of cyclotourers for years but I hadn't known Pupu before dec.2009 (?) also he is one of the best cycloclimbers in Hungary.

Hungary is a BIG country, small only in size.

I think more and more people are buying bicycles and they finally has to do something with them. Local and other communities were destroyed during communism (a bit strange: communism against community, isn't it?), so the people/we just started to discover how good is to belong to somewhere. Even if only virtually.
And to belong to the "more lucky" -as Pupu wrote - part of the world is a cream on the cake.

I'm proud and happy to be member of the club, this can be contagious

Thanks for the possibility to join!

Thank you for so interesting posts !
Your success is mine , I explain :
In the beginning of the challenge at the end of the 80's, before the fall of the Wall, it was the cold war. Of course, like Pupu told, there were difficulties for you to come in western countries, but there were also difficulties for us to go in your countries : very rare visas,... Our pioneers in your countries took some risks too.
When I went to cycle in Romania, Bulgaria in 2002, I saw splendid mountains and I told me in my own : If you've big in those countries, it's a luck for the challenge but if you'll get members of the big in those countries, it would be more than a luck, it would be a success. This success is coming.
When I went alone from the western countries in your meeting in 2008, during my "Sihungary" linking the crossroad in Sion in Switzerland and the one in Salgotárjan in Hungary, I had some anxiety crossing the border from Austria to Hungary (old reflex) but I was so magnifically received by Gabór Kreicsi and his family that I have been back home with the insurance of the coming success in your country.
And I had a great pleasure to cycle with the hungarian members so proud of their beautiful country and waking up in the cycletouring life.
But because I was looking at all the european countries since 30 years, don't think that you're alone in this way! Spain for example, 30 years ago, under Franco, had also closed borders, with of course some champion in the cycling races (Bahamontes) but no cycletourism at all.
On the other way, France, Belgium or the Netherlands have more than 100 years of cycletourism behind them, but in those countries... cycloclimbing is only 30 years old.
In your countries, like in Spain, cycletourism and cycleclimbing were born together in the same period : it's a luck for you, take this chance.

I hope 2 things about your countries in the coming years :

1) a great eastern meeting in the Tatras (CZ-SK-PL) in the year 2012. In Hungary in 2008, I was alone between many hungarian members. In 2009, in Oberstdorf, meeting in Germany, there were 4 hungarian between 40 western members. There, in 2012, I really hope as many eastern as western members, a perfect balance, to help them to understand one another, sharing the same experiences and managing some common goals for the future.

2) The appearance of parallel cycloclimbing events or cycloclimbing challenges in the eastern countries. For example, great cyclesport events with good climbs and above all something like "mounts of France" in France, or "Cima" in Spain, giving good alternative goals just aside the challenge "big" to climb more and more inside your countries, too. In Belgium, we have cyclo-côteurs tours and organized tours with differences of level in our cycletouring federation. It gives us the opportunity to train us in our country with a good goal and finally to be fit and well to reach our great BIGs afterwards. We'll be able in the BIG's website or in our newsletters and/or reviews to promote eventually those new appearing challenges.

Be sure of all our attention and all our friendships !
What I like is here with our secretary Helmuth among you, symbol for me of the european cycloclimbing building http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-8QVJPNKY.jpg
