PostSubject: world's longest ascent / highest points reached by bike   Sun Dec 07, 2008 11:40 pm

A few years ago I found a website where the longest / hardest or those roads were liesed which goes to the highest point on that continent.
For example a few in Peru, a few in Nepal and the Manua Kea at Hawaii, Bonette, Pico Veleta in Europe...

Can somebody help me finding it ?

Or those page is "past" and do that exist no longer ? (I'm not sure this sentence was gramatically correct)

Thanks: Gabor

or a video like in

In Africa, the battle seems to be between Morocco (all the Tizi-xxxx) and in south-Africa. For this last country, or more precisely, its neighbour Lesotho, it is the Tlaeeng Pass (3255m)

or

(see down the last pictures)

And finally, in Oceania, golden crown for the country New Zealand and its Mount Cook village (more than 3700m)

This is incorrect, MtCook village is at approx. 750m. as you can't get much higher then that.

To the best of my knowledge the correct one should be Mount Kosciuszko at 2215m (New South wales, Australia)

Correct, last year I went to New-Zealand and there is no road leading to the top of Moint Cook ! Mount Cook village is very lower.

The highest road of Oceania will probably be on New Guinea, as the Highlands Highway reaches up to 2478m.

Regarding my own experience, the highest pass in South America - and may be worldwide - is in Chile at 5080m (GPS-Precision). Paso Picavilque. The road is on the way Colchane-Cariquima-Paso Picavilque-Lirima-Salar de Huasco. I 've been on 2010-March-13. Pictures are available under http://www.georges-bike-trips.blogspot.com ->South America ->13. March 2010

The highest Road was upon a time at over 5900m: same blog, but 9th March 2010. It is an old sulfur mine, where there is a rest of drilling truck at over 6000m. The top of the volcano is then near at 6172m over sea level. BUT: the "road" do not exist anymore... And once needs some luck and stupidity (I had plenty of both) to reach the top...

Cheers... enjoy biking! :-)

Georges

Won't be funny... No
Those guys here were more lucky: http://www.extrawheel.com/en/3/expeditions/ ->Altiplano Andes
At that time, the road was ok when they went up. There is at some points NO road anymore...

In the video, they mention that water are polluted by sulfur:
1) I doubt sulfur would be filtered out by their filter.
2) Sulfur is less the problem then mercury and the other metals from all the mines in the Andes. You never know where the water is coming from.

So you need at least 25kg of water for one person only. Than food, tent etc... and much much luck (weather, wind, coldness, accident...)
What is not said: you can use your GSM up to the top at 6176m due to the mine in the north and Ollagüe in the east.

I guess there are better "challenges" to choose...

;-)

Cheers, Georges
