I started in 1998 from Pinos-Genil to the Pico Veleta (48 km).
First part, a narrow fine road out of Pinos-Genil to the national road (3km).
Afterwards, the national road : many tracks but upper, long and large road with a few hostels.
After 35km, Sol y Nieves, winter resort.
Two solutions: to take the ring (yes!) less steep and always long, or to cut through the village (steeper).
After 4km, the barrieer. Stop for the car ! Bikes are ok further but the last kilometers become now gravelled (in 1998, it was entirely surfaced).
But no problem to reach the top at 3334m. The final sections are steep !
Marvelous view on Sol y Nieve and Granada and perhaps with a good sun to Marocco in southern side.

climbing is going higher - grimper c'est s'élever

I climbed Pico Veleta in 1999. A very very long long climb but not really steep... except if you want to climb it through Guejar Sierra! Look the profile:
Look the map at the bottom of the former page.
The following one is the profile if you would climb direct through Canales:
Better this one:
(this is an article of a cyclingtourist ride by the end of July)

As far as I know, the road is no more mantained from the last barreer on. Maybe last 10 km. Then maybe you could consider bringring the ciclocross bike ;.)

From the barreer at about 2550m to the top it is about 13 km. I was there in september and october and I saw more racing bikes than ATB. The road is partly bad. The last part, could be 1 km, is a dirt road. The last 15 meters elevation shift there are only rocks so you have to carry your bike. It is worth while.

A guy in my bicycle club in Sweden has been taking part in a road bicycle competition over the Pico Veleta some years ago (he trained with some Pro Tour guy down in Spain one or tour two years, I think), so apparently it is usable with a road bike. /Jerry
